SLC Highlights | Public Spaces Before and After at Orchard Pointe Senior Community in Port Orchard, Washington

Located in Port Orchard, Washington, Orchard Pointe Senior Living community is surrounded by the waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Flanked by the winding Puget Sound with a backdrop forests of the Olympic Mountains, there was no shortage of outdoor inspiration to influence the interior design scope. The community needed to renovate and update the furniture, floors and paint throughout all common areas. The design team at zpd+a envisioned an inviting, fresh look for the Memory Care facility, implementing an organic, textured scheme designed to appeal to the varied needs and comfort of the residents, as well as their families and the community employees while adhering to the specific requirements of accessibility and mobility needs relevant to the population of the community.

The concept for Orchard Pointe considered a spectrum of texture, color and materials that connect the waterfront community to the local seafaring culture and working port environment. The intention to streamline and update the materiality of finishes elevating them from their prior incarnations to the the rhythms of the sea at the front door and the wild beauty of the Olympic forest to the west.

Between sea and peak: The interior integrates a color palette inspired by forest and water, accented by chestnut, warm metal finishes, rich stained wood and earthy tones. Painted wood and brass accents pay a nod to the seafaring heritage of the community, while wood and chunky weaves reflect the natural environment. Layered together, these finishes combine to create an environment of relaxation and connection.

Construction and installation throughout the COVID pandemic required ongoing care to protect the at-risk population and was handled with remote oversight from the ownership and design team. Protocols were thoroughly adhered to protect the residents and employees, while maintaining overall expectations and deliverables. This required communications dexterity and weekly meetings with ownership, procurement team, general contractor, construction project manager and the Orchard Pointe community staff.
